Background
Shang-Chi (whose name means "rising and advancing spirit") is the son of Fu Manchu, also known as Zheng Zu, an immortal mastermind and sorceror who once sought to rule the world. He was raised in isolation in his father's Honan mountain retreat where he was trained by world-class martial artists to become the deadliest enforcer of the evil crimelord. When he came of age, his first order as an honorable son was to find and kill Sir Denis Neyland Smith, his father's archnemesis. Convinced by his duplicitous sire that Smith was an evil man, he agreed and found his target in England.
Instead of completing his mission, however, the young fighter was shown by Smith that his father was among the world's worst villains, responsible for untold suffering and death. Disavowing his heritage and abandoning his task, he began to wander the world in search of his identity and some inner peace, constantly hounded by agents of Fu Manchu. He would eventually join Smith and several other operatives of MI-6 in many adventures, including the eventual destruction of his father's criminal empire and his apparent final death.
Retiring from the "games of death and deceit" that had troubled him for so long, the contemplative martial artist retired to a small village in China to live the life of a fisherman. He was brought out of retirement several times in the years since to aid other heroes and agencies, often as a result of his supposedly deceased father's return. While he has occasionally returned to seek enlightenment and solitude in his homeland, he has begun to become more active in the New York area.
Someone else would describe me as...
Shang-Chi is the Master of Kung Fu, one of the top five fighters in the Marvel Universe. While he possesses no metahuman powers, his extensive martial arts training and skill in esoteric Asian arts have allowed him to fight alongside and against powerful superhumans. He is also something of a philosopher, preferring contemplation and quiet to adventure and violence. Despite regular proclamations that he is done with the life of a hero, however, he inevitably returns to action when his abilities are needed to combat evil.
Character relationships
Shang-Chi is closest to his former allies in MI-6 and Freelance Restorations, including Clive Reston, Leiko Wu (his on-again, off-again lover), Black Jack Tarr, Dr. Petrie, and Sir Neyland Smith. While he sees them less frequently than he once did, he considers them the closest thing he has to a real family, with Smith replacing his biological father in his affection and role as mentor.
He is well-acquainted with fellow martial artist heroes such as Iron Fist, Wolverine, and Daredevil, and he has allied himself with them to help take down large-scale threats to New York City and the world at large. He has worked with several other heroes, including the Punisher, Moon Knight, Black Widow, Spider-Man, and the Thing. He has many connections to the espionage world through his time with MI-6, including some ties to S.H.I.E.L.D. and M-13. More recently he has helped the Secret Avengers, the black ops wing of that superhero team. As a result of his recent time as part of Heroes for Hire, he has also come to know Misty Knight, Colleen Wing, Black Cat, Tarantula, Humbug, Orka, and Paladin.
Shang-Chi's greatest foe is his sinister father, the infamous Fu Manchu, aka Zheng Zu. While his dad has been seemingly killed many times at the climax of their confrontations, his powers as a sorceror and alchemist have regularly allowed him to return from the grave and once more trouble the world. Even when his father is deceased, however, Shang has had to deal with his former empire, including an extensive network of Si-Fan assassins. He has also been troubled by the plotting of his half-sister Fah Lo Suee, a femme fatale who often sought to overthrow her father.
Shang-Chi has faced numerous costumed villains sent by his father and other masterminds to defeat him. These have included Zaran the Weapon Master, Shockwave, Razor Fist, Shadow Stalker, and a litany of other would-be masters of martial arts. A more respected rival of his is the ex-Chinese secret agent Shen Kuei, aka Cat.
